A long about way to state a fact about Dick Cheney
I wish to consider iconic images in our culture; those images most of us come to know through various forms of media. Media meaning: TV, Movies, Books, Magazines, Radio, internet, etc. I will list some male images in our culture that have been in the media over the last fifty years. After listing some, I wish to make a few comments.
Some names: Malcolm X, MLK, Jr., John Wayne, George W. Bush, Robert Kennedy, Matt Dillion of (Gun Smoke) Dick Cheney, LBJ, Muhammad Ali, Dick Clark, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Morris, "Hoss" of Bonanza, Joe Frazier, Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Humphery Bogart, Walter Cronkite, Archie Bunker, Marlon Brando, Charlie Rose, Larry King, JZ, Mick Jagger, Sean Hannity, Richard Pryor, Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Gore Vidal, William Buckley, Jerry Sienfeld, Matt Lauer, Jim Brown (NFL) Johnny Depp, Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert Denero, Paul Newman, Joe Namath, Barach Obama, Al Gore, Richard Nixon, Michael J. Fox, Bill Clinton, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Anderson Cooper, Tip O' Neil, John Kennedy, Bill Cosby, Cesar Chavez, Fidel Castro, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Chris Rock, Michael Moore, Bernard Madoff, Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Snyder, Jack Lemmon, Henry Arron, Lebron James, Sydney Portier ... one more before ending this list..... I am attempting to find a strong current masculine leader in the media other than our president whom I mentioned previously........... one does not come to mind.
Of these iconic images above, those that appear to meet the standard of most worthy of respect for their courage and masculine confidence (of course my own standard) are Malcolm X, MLK Jr., Barach Obama, Cesar Chavez, Muhammad Ali, "Hoss" of Bonanza and Sydney Portier.
Those who appear to be the least worthy of respect are Ronald Reagan, Dick Cheney and Dick Morris.
When I utilize the term respect, I am referring to respect for the masculine image that has been portrayed or is currently being portrayed.
Woefully inadequate images are obviously Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.
Malcolm X appeared to be strong, purposeful, respectful, intelligent and sincere, as do MLK Jr., Barach Obama, Cesar Chavez, Muhammad Ali and "Hoss" of Bonanza. Of course "Hoss" is a fictional character but since most of us come to know all of these men through the media, all are on one level, fictional.
Now to conclude this Op Ed regarding - the least worthy- Ronald Reagan, DicK Cheney and Dick Morris- It should not be difficult to determine why these images deserve no respect- just review or watch any media coverage of these three. What do they all appear to have in common? They all seem to be lost in the headlights, no sincere purpose, no strong sense of self- and not that it should matter ( none served in the military). Of course those of whom I stated I have the most respect for did not serve in the armed forces as well, but these men are not Chicken Hawks as are Ronald Reagan and Dick Cheney. Dick Morris, well he is just dick.
I will conclude with a fact: Dick Cheney applied five times for a deferment from serving in the armed forces and was granted five deferments.
In other words: Dick Cheney filled out deferment forms five separate times with his little shakey timid hands and was granted all five. This poor excuse for a man represents the true defintion of a Chicken Hawk.
