National Day Of Protest Against Prop 8

Original Post @ A World Of Progress

What good does attending a protest do?
I have to do something.
And this gives me something to do with this little "issue" I have developed.

This not going to let it go this time and just slip back into social oblivion "issue".

I have been trying for a week to put it away. I have always been able to do that throughout my entire life. I was always bullied into thinking I had no choice and besides...I do have other stuff to do.

But there it is...it just keeps popping up into my consciousness and I get mad all over again. "Who in the hell do they think they are?"

Guess the whole "Yes We Can" Obama thing got something started. Too bad so many who voted for progress with one hand tried to shove us back in the closet with the other. No. Not going to work that way this time.

Seems a lot of us Gay folk are just about fed up with being told who we can and can't marry.

This time it's different for a lot of folks because people from outside the Gay community are getting into the fight on our behalf. They recognize the hypocrisy as the same hypocrisy that has said "no you can't" to women and people of color. We welcome them and applaud their courage to stand with us against hate and prejudice.

Can you hear it LDS, Focus On The Family, Family Research Council and the rest?
Oh, yes...I think you can.
That is the sound of unity and purpose gathering to fight you.

The problem, in my opinion, with the protesting of Prop 8 is all this energy should have been put out before the vote. The passing of Prop 8 has angered me also but for a completly different reason. The press reported the exit poll numbers and then suddenly it was blacks fault that prop 8 passed.

But let's discuss pre vote on Prop 8. Did the gays in California get their message out outside of Chealse Street? I read it was 3 weeks before the vote before they translated any print media they had into spanish. Every photo every video every piece of media i saw had all white gay and lesbians on them. There is a huge black LGBT community in California...where were they? Did anyone invite them?

I am all for the grass roots movement and i will probably head to Downtown Baltimore tomorrow to show my support but all this movement is a day late and a dollar short.

Oh and bypassing the Black LGBT community and reaching out to the NAACP a organization which has had almost no teeth in the black community in the last 20 years....great move.

You are completely correct on all counts.
I think some very important lessons were learned here and learned the hard way. This was a perfect opportunity to win that fight and because of all the reasons you cite it did not happen. I am hoping we can now learn from acting a little too much like what we oppose and move forward with a truly representative coalition. It is too late for that battle but it is never too late to learn from our mistakes, get it right and move forward with a better plan.
Thanks for commenting and for coming out and lending your support to getting it right.
