What is a recession?

Your analysis is brilliant but, you don't seem to know what a recession is. "The NBER does not define a recession in terms of two consecutive quarters of decline in real GDP. Rather, a recession i... Continue

Resolved, the US economy has begun a deflationary spiral from which we will emerge a different country.

Wow, I think that our core belief systems may be so different that any further debate may be futile. I would have to write a thorough explanation of my beliefs to even begin to respond to your comment. You touched on so many issues. Instead, I would love to continue to debate you one issue at a time here, at your blog, and mine.
(Don't think this means you won!)

Adam,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have been busy and barely keeping up with my blog. First, I guess I will answer your questions. Ideally, yes, I think government should be able, through trial and error, to come up with more effective and desirable proscriptive laws. Of course because of human nature I do not believe that it is likely to occur. The biggest problem I see with centralized governments is inevitable corruption. People or institutions who already have power and or money will use that power and money to ensure that proscriptive laws are made in their favor.
Now I am not so niave that I don't think corruption is possible in a free market economy. I just think that corruption (or even honest malinvestment) is more easily weeded out if not encouraged, subsidized and propped up by a corrupt government.
You said you that you believe government monopoly over the laws is necessary for a civilized society, but you did not say why. I am sure you have your reasons and would love to hear them. I also thought you might be interested in this.
Again, I find it inevitable but not necessary.
Also, on the issue of letting insolvent banks fail. I do not say this to stick it to the man or because I do not understand the consequences. I sincerly feel that although painful in the short term, it would be less damaging to our economy in the long run.
About your comment on another post, do you really advocate inflating the money supply? Inflation is so incredibly regressive in its effects that I was suprised to see you say you advise money printing.
One last thing. I really need to work on my vocabulary. I had to look up three different words that you used in your comment. Maybe it is time for me to have a word of the day.
